Assessments

What is an Narrative Assessment?

A Narrative Assessment is one of the end of the year assessment options allowed by Ohio regulations.
This is often the preferred method of assessment especially for those just starting out homeschooling. The assessor can give you tips to help you with any problems you may have.
The assessment itself depends on who is doing the assessing, but here are some of the basics..

  • First, you will need to prepare your portfolio. (Samples of your child's work)
  • Schedule an appointment with a certified teacher who is familiar with homeschool students.   Choose a teacher who has assessed students in the past.   If the teacher has never completed an assessment, make sure they are aware of the homeschool regulations. It's best to find a teacher who has homeschooled their own children - if possible.
  • Your child's assessor will review the portfolio and answer any questions.
  • Take advantage of your assessor's expertise!   They may offer you suggestions that can significantly improve your Home School!
  • Have your child's assessor fill out this form or one like it.  (HSLDA provides forms for their members, and some assessors will have their own forms)
  • Then mail the form with your next year's notification.
